Formula
Human years = 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2) for cats aged 2 or older; under 2, read from the chart (1 month ≈ 1, 6 months ≈ 10, 12 months ≈ 15, 18 months ≈ 21)
- cat age
- the cat's age in years, with extra months as a fraction of a year
- 24
- human-year equivalent of a 2-year-old cat
- 4
- human years added for each cat year after the second birthday
What a cat’s age in human years means
Cats grow up fast and then age slowly. Within a year a kitten reaches its adult size and can breed, which in people takes well into the teens. After that, the pace settles down. A cat age calculator turns those two speeds into one familiar number, the age a person would be at the same point of development.
That number is useful for picturing where your cat is in life. A 3-year-old cat is roughly a 28-year-old adult, while a 14-year-old cat is about 72, an age at which you’d expect regular health checks. It isn’t a medical measurement, and two cats of the same age can be in very different shape.
How to use the cat age calculator
- Enter your cat’s age in whole years. For a kitten under a year old, enter 0.
- Add the extra months if you know them, from 0 to 11. A cat of 3 years and 4 months is entered as 3 and 4.
- Read the result: the human-year equivalent, the life stage and how often the vet should see your cat.
If you only know the date of birth, the date difference calculator gives the exact years and months. The calculator also shows what the old “7 × age” rule would have said, so you can see how far off it is.
How to calculate cat age in human years by hand
The chart behind this calculator, published by the feline welfare charity International Cat Care, works in three phases.
Kittens (up to 12 months). Kittens race through childhood. A 2-month-old is about 2 in human years, a 6-month-old about 10, and a 7-month-old about 12. Between those points you can interpolate.
The junior phase (12 to 24 months). The first birthday equals about 15 human years, 18 months about 21 and the second birthday 24.
Every year after 2. Add 4 human years per cat year:
Human years = 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2)
Take an 8-year-old cat: 24 + 4 × 6 = 24 + 24 = 48 human years. For a cat of 12 years and 6 months, the age is 12.5 years, so 24 + 4 × 10.5 = 66.
Cat years to human years chart

| 6 months | 10 | Kitten |
| 1 year | 15 | Young adult |
| 18 months | 21 | Young adult |
| 2 years | 24 | Young adult |
| 4 years | 32 | Young adult |
| 7 years | 44 | Mature adult |
| 10 years | 56 | Mature adult |
| 11 years | 60 | Senior |
| 15 years | 76 | Senior |

The four feline life stages
In 2021 the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners replaced an older six-stage scheme with four stages that match how owners see their cats grow up.
Kitten: birth up to 1 year
This is the time for vaccinations, neutering and socialization. Kittens learn to accept handling and other animals most easily in their first months, so gentle, positive experiences pay off for life.
Young adult: 1 to 6 years
Most cats are at their healthiest here, but this is when weight starts to creep up. The guidelines put obesity prevention at the top of the list for this stage.
Mature adult: 7 to 10 years
Roughly 44 to 56 in human years. Dental disease and early signs of chronic illness become more common, so annual checkups matter more.
Senior: over 10 years
From about 60 human years onward. The guidelines recommend a vet visit at least every six months, with bloodwork and blood pressure checks, because kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis are frequent at this age and are easier to manage when caught early.
Why the 7-year rule doesn’t fit cats
Multiplying by seven assumes cats age at the same pace for their whole life. They don’t. The rule says a 1-year-old cat is like a 7-year-old child, yet a 1-year-old cat is fully grown and fertile. At the other end, it puts a 20-year-old cat at 140. The chart gives 96, which matches the fact that 20 is an old but reachable age for a well-cared-for cat.
Common mistakes
- Rounding a kitten to 0 or 1 year. Kittens change fastest, so months matter. A 4-month-old and a 10-month-old are about 6 and 14 in human years.
- Treating the human age as a health score. An active 12-year-old cat and a frail one get the same figure. Behavior, weight and vet findings tell you more.
- Expecting a breed adjustment. The chart and life stages apply to all domestic cats. Breed affects lifespan risks, not the conversion.
Real-life uses
Knowing your cat’s life stage helps you choose food formulated for kittens, adults or seniors, plan the right checkup schedule, and make sense of changes in behavior. Owners of both a cat and a dog can compare them with the dog age calculator, which uses a size-based chart because dog breeds age at very different rates. For your own age in years, months and days, use the age calculator.
Worked examples
A 5-year-old cat
Five cat years: 24 for the first two, plus 3 × 4 = 12. A young adult.
Inputs: Cat’s age = 5 years
First two years = 15 + 9 = 24 human years; each year after adds 4 24 + 4 × (5 − 2) = 36
Answer: A cat aged 5 years is about 36 in human years, in the young adult life stage.
A 13-year-old senior cat
24 + 11 × 4 = 68. Over 10 years, so a senior.
Inputs: Cat’s age = 13 years
First two years = 15 + 9 = 24 human years; each year after adds 4 24 + 4 × (13 − 2) = 68
Answer: A cat aged 13 years is about 68 in human years, in the senior life stage.
A cat of 1 year 9 months
Halfway between the chart’s 18-month (21) and 2-year (24) points: 21 + 3 × 0.5 = 22.5, which rounds to 23.
Inputs: Cat’s age = 1 years; Extra months = 9 months
Chart: 12 months ≈ 15, 18 months ≈ 21, 2 years ≈ 24 human years Between 18 months (21) and 2 years (24): 21 + 3 × (1.75 − 1.5) ÷ 0.5 = 22.5
Answer: A cat aged 1 year 9 months is about 23 in human years, in the young adult life stage.
A 9-month-old kitten (edge case)
Nine months falls between the chart’s 7-month (12) and 12-month (15) points: 12 + 3 × 2 ÷ 5 = 13.2, which rounds to 13. Still a kitten until the first birthday.
Inputs: Cat’s age = 0 years; Extra months = 9 months
Chart: 12 months ≈ 15, 18 months ≈ 21, 2 years ≈ 24 human years Under 1 year: read from the kitten chart (1 month ≈ 1, 2 ≈ 2, 3 ≈ 4, 4 ≈ 6, 5 ≈ 8, 6 ≈ 10, 7 months ≈ 12, 12 months ≈ 15), interpolating between points = 13.2
Answer: A cat aged 9 months is about 13 in human years, in the kitten life stage.
Assumptions and limitations
- Human-year equivalents follow the International Cat Care age chart, the 15 / 24 / +4 scheme that veterinary organizations use with owners. Between two chart points, the value is interpolated in a straight line.
- The kitten chart points are 1 month ≈ 1, 2 ≈ 2, 3 ≈ 4, 4 ≈ 6, 5 ≈ 8, 6 ≈ 10, 7 months ≈ 12, 12 months ≈ 15, 18 months ≈ 21 and 2 years ≈ 24 human years.
- Life stages follow the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines: kitten (birth up to 1 year), young adult (1–6 years), mature adult (7–10 years) and senior (over 10 years).
- The result is rounded to the nearest whole human year. The same chart is used for every breed, indoor or outdoor, because the guidelines don't adjust for breed.
- Human-year figures are a way to picture maturity, not a health assessment. Use them as an estimate, not veterinary advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a cat's age in human years?
Count the first year as 15 human years and the second as 9 more, so a 2-year-old cat is about 24. After that, add 4 human years for each cat year. A 9-year-old cat is 24 + 7 × 4 = 52 in human years.
How many human years is one cat year?
It depends on the cat's age. The first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 9, and every year after that about 4. A single "cat year" multiplier doesn't work because cats mature very quickly at first and then age at a steady pace.
Is the "multiply by 7" rule right for cats?
No. It undercounts young cats and overcounts old ones. A 1-year-old cat is sexually mature, more like a 15-year-old person than a 7-year-old, while a 20-year-old cat is about 96 in human years, not 140.
At what age is a cat considered senior?
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines call cats over 10 years senior. Cats aged 7 to 10 are mature adults. Senior cats should see the vet at least every six months, because kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis become more common.
How old is a 6-month-old kitten in human years?
About 10. Kittens age fastest of all. A 3-month-old kitten is roughly a 4-year-old child, and by its first birthday a cat is about 15 in human years.
Does breed change a cat's age in human years?
The standard chart doesn't adjust for breed, and the feline life stage guidelines apply one set of stages to all cats. Lifespans do vary between breeds and individual cats, so treat the human-year figure as a guide to maturity rather than a prediction.
How can I tell how old my cat is if I don't know its birthday?
A vet estimates age from teeth, eyes, coat and muscle tone. Kittens can be aged quite closely from their teeth; adult cats only roughly. Enter the vet's best estimate into the calculator.
