How age is counted
Age is normally stated in completed units. You are not a year older until your birthday has arrived, so someone born in June is still the previous age throughout May. The calculator follows the same rule for months and days.
The age calculator counts the number of whole months from your date of birth, using the day of the month you were born as the anchor. Each month is complete when that day comes round again. The leftover days since the most recent “month-day” make up the days figure. Twelve completed months make a year.
How to calculate age from a date of birth
You can check any result with a calendar and three steps. Take someone born on Wednesday, August 23, 1972, and find their age on October 4, 2026.
- Whole years. The 2026 birthday, August 23, has already passed by October 4, so the person has completed 2026 − 1972 = 54 years. If the birthday had not yet arrived, you would subtract one.
- Whole months. Count forward from the last birthday in steps of one month, keeping the 23rd as the anchor. September 23 is one month. October 23 is after October 4, so the count stops at 1 month.
- Remaining days. From September 23 to October 4 is 7 days to the end of September (a 30-day month) plus 4 days in October, which makes 11 days.
The age is 54 years, 1 month and 11 days. Counted as a single number, it is 19,765 days, or 2,823 weeks and 4 days, and the next birthday is Monday, August 23, 2027, in 323 days. Totals in days are tedious by hand because every month and every leap day has to be counted, which is where the calculator saves the most time.
Month-end and leap-day birthdays
Months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so some birth dates don’t occur every month. If you were born on the 31st, there is no 31st in April, June, September or November, or in February. In those months the age calculator treats the last day of the month as the date you complete another month. Someone born on March 31 is one month old on April 30, not on May 1.
February 29 birthdays work the same way. The day exists only in leap years: years divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be. In other years the birthday is counted on February 28. This is a convention rather than a universal rule, and the legal answer depends on where you live. The guide to how leap years work explains the calendar rule in more detail.
| Born on | Age on | Result |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 1990 | April 29, 2026 | 36 years, 0 months, 29 days |
| March 31, 1990 | April 30, 2026 | 36 years, 1 month, 0 days |
| February 29, 2004 | February 27, 2026 | 21 years, 11 months, 29 days |
| February 29, 2004 | February 28, 2026 | 22 years, 0 months, 0 days |
| February 29, 2004 | March 1, 2026 | 22 years, 0 months, 1 day |
Age in months, weeks and days
Below the main result you also see the age as a single count of months, weeks or days. These are useful when an age has to be expressed in one unit. Doctors often give a baby’s age in weeks or months, and some forms ask for age in days.
The total in days is the exact number of calendar days between the two dates, including any leap days. The weeks figure divides that total by 7 and shows the remaining days separately.
Day-count milestones
Round numbers of days alive make popular milestones. The table below is an illustration for one example birth date, Saturday, May 20, 1995. Your own dates will differ, so enter your date of birth in the date calculator and add the number of days to find yours.
| Milestone | Date reached (born May 20, 1995) | Age in completed years and months |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 days | Friday, February 13, 1998 | 2 years, 8 months |
| 5,000 days | Monday, January 26, 2009 | 13 years, 8 months |
| 10,000 days | Wednesday, October 5, 2022 | 27 years, 4 months |
| 15,000 days | Friday, June 13, 2036 | 41 years, 0 months |
| 20,000 days | Sunday, February 20, 2050 | 54 years, 9 months |
| 25,000 days | Tuesday, October 30, 2063 | 68 years, 5 months |
A billion seconds is about 11,574 days, or roughly 31 years and 8 months.
Finding an age on a specific date
Many rules depend on an age on a particular date rather than an age today. To check one, keep the date of birth and change “Age on this date” to the cutoff. The calculator then measures from date to date instead of up to today, and the date can be in the past or the future.
- School entry and youth sports. Schools and leagues often set a cutoff, such as being 5 by September 1 or a set age on January 1 of the season. Enter the cutoff in the “Age on this date” field. A child born on September 2 misses a September 1 cutoff by a single day, as one of the worked examples below shows.
- Legal ages. Voting, driving, buying alcohol and signing contracts all depend on a completed age. The day you turn 18 is the anniversary of your birth date, so someone born on October 4, 2008 is 18 on October 4, 2026.
- Benefits and retirement. Pension and insurance rules may refer to the date you reach an age, or to the first day of the following month. The calculator gives the age itself; check the scheme’s wording for which date counts.
- Health and development. A baby’s age is often tracked in weeks and months, and the totals here give those numbers directly. Clinical adjustments, such as a corrected age for a premature baby, are not applied.
Tips and common mistakes
- Subtracting only the years. 2026 − 1972 gives 54, but that is only right once the 2026 birthday has passed. Before it, the person is 53.
- Using 365 days per year. Converting an age in days to years by dividing by 365 drifts by about a day every four years. Dividing by 365.25 is closer, but counting calendar dates is exact.
- Expecting the time of day to count. The calculator uses dates only, so a birth at 11 PM and one at 1 AM on the same day give the same age.
- Checking a future date. To plan ahead, set “Age on this date” to the future date rather than adding years to today’s age in your head.
Glossary
- Completed age. The number of full years since birth, which is how age is normally stated.
- Chronological age. Age measured from the date of birth, as opposed to a corrected or developmental age.
- Leap day. February 29, which is added in leap years only.
- Anniversary date. The same month and day as the birth date in a later year; the day a person’s completed age goes up.
Other date calculations
To count the days between two dates that aren’t a birthday, such as the length of an event or the time until a deadline, use the days between dates calculator. To find the date a set number of days, months or years after a given date, such as when someone will reach a certain age, use the date calculator. All of the site’s time and date calculators use the same calendar rules.

Answer: Age on Sunday, October 4, 2026: 41 years, 8 months, 4 days (15,221 days).
Assumptions and limitations
- Ages are counted in whole calendar months from the day of the month you were born. When that day doesn't exist in a month (such as the 31st in April), the month is treated as complete on its last day.
- People born on February 29 are counted as having a birthday on February 28 in common years. Legal conventions vary by country; some treat March 1 as the birthday instead, so check the rule that applies if the date matters for a legal age.
- The calculation uses calendar dates only. The time of day you were born and time zones are not taken into account.
- "Today" is the current date on your device. If your device clock or time zone is set incorrectly, change the date field by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my age in days not match years multiplied by 365?
Years have different lengths. Leap years add an extra day roughly once every four years, so a 40-year-old has lived through about ten of them. The calculator counts the actual calendar days between the two dates, so leap days are included automatically.
How is age calculated for someone born on February 29?
In a leap year the birthday falls on February 29 as normal. In other years the calculator counts the birthday on February 28, so the age goes up on that day. Some countries' laws use March 1 instead, which can matter for things like the legal driving or drinking age.
Can I find someone's age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the "Age on this date" field from today's date to any date on or after the date of birth. This is useful for checking eligibility on a deadline, such as an age limit on a competition entry date.
Does the time of day I was born change my age?
Not in this calculator. It works with calendar dates only, so you turn a year older at the start of your birthday. If you were born late in the evening, or in a different time zone from where you are now, your age in hours would differ slightly, but your age in years, months and days is the same.
How do I work out the date I turn a certain age?
Add that many years to the date of birth with the date calculator. For example, someone born on October 4, 2008 turns 18 on October 4, 2026. A February 29 birth date moves to February 28 in a common year, matching how this calculator counts birthdays.
Why does the months figure sometimes look one day off at the end of a month?
Months are anchored to the day you were born. If that day doesn't exist in a month, the month is completed on the last day instead. Someone born on March 31 is one month older on April 30, so on April 29 the result shows 0 months and 29 days.
How do you calculate the age gap between two people?
Treat the earlier date of birth as the start and the later one as the end, and count the time between them with the [days between dates calculator](/date-difference-calculator/). Someone born on March 10, 1988 is 3 years, 3 months and 22 days (1,209 days) older than someone born on July 2, 1991.
