Formula

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Paid weeks per year); Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Paid weeks per year

Annual salary
gross yearly pay before taxes and deductions
Hours per week
the hours you are paid for in a normal week (40 for most full-time jobs)
Paid weeks per year
52 if vacation and holidays are paid, fewer if some weeks are unpaid

What the calculator does

This salary to hourly calculator converts pay in both directions. Choose Salary to hourly to turn an annual salary into an hourly rate, or Hourly to salary to turn an hourly wage into a yearly figure. Either way you get the same set of results:

  • Hourly rate or annual salary, depending on the direction.
  • Monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily pay, plus a semimonthly figure in the table.
  • Paid hours per year, so you can see exactly what the rate is divided by.

Every number the salary to hourly calculator shows is gross pay, before taxes and deductions. That makes it the right figure for comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one, checking a pay stub’s gross line, or working out what a raise means per hour.

How to use it

  1. Pick the direction.
  2. Enter the salary or the hourly wage.
  3. Enter your usual hours per week. Full-time jobs are usually 40, but 37.5 and 35 are common in offices and schools.
  4. Enter paid weeks per year. Keep 52 if your vacation and holidays are paid. Lower it only for weeks you are not paid at all.
  5. Enter workdays per week if you do not work five days, so the daily figure is right.

The results update as you type, and the table shows gross pay for every common pay period.

The salary to hourly formula

The conversion rests on one number: the hours you are paid for in a year.

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

Run it backward to go from hourly to salary:

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year

For a standard full-time job, 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. That is why 2,080 appears in so many payroll rules of thumb. Federal wage regulations convert salaries the same way: a monthly salary becomes a weekly figure by multiplying by 12 and dividing by 52, and the weekly figure is divided by the hours it covers.

Converting salary to hourly by hand

Take a $50,000 salary for a 40-hour week with all 52 weeks paid.

  1. Paid hours per year: 40 × 52 = 2,080.
  2. Hourly rate: $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.038…, or $24.04.
  3. Monthly: $50,000 ÷ 12 = $4,166.67.
  4. Biweekly: $50,000 ÷ 26 = $1,923.08.
  5. Weekly: $24.038… × 40 = $961.54, so a 5-day week is $192.31 a day.

Change the schedule and the rate moves. The same $50,000 is $21.37 an hour if you routinely work 45 hours a week, and $26.60 if only 47 weeks a year are paid.

Converting hourly to salary by hand

Take $28 an hour at 40 hours a week, every week of the year.

  1. Hours per year: 40 × 52 = 2,080.
  2. Annual salary: $28 × 2,080 = $58,240.
  3. Monthly: $58,240 ÷ 12 = $4,853.33. Note that this is more than four weeks of pay ($4,480), because most months are a little longer than four weeks.
  4. Biweekly: $58,240 ÷ 26 = $2,240.

Comparing a salaried job with an hourly one

A salary and an hourly wage are only comparable once both are on the same schedule. Before comparing offers, check:

  • Real hours. A salaried role that routinely runs 50 hours a week earns less per hour than the headline figure suggests. Enter your realistic weekly hours in the salary to hourly calculator to see it.
  • Overtime. Hourly, non-exempt workers are owed at least time and a half after 40 hours in a workweek under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Many salaried employees are exempt and get no extra pay for long weeks. The overtime pay calculator shows what those extra hours add.
  • Paid time off. An hourly job with unpaid holidays has fewer paid weeks. Lower the weeks to compare fairly.
  • Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and bonuses are real compensation that this salary to hourly calculator does not count.

If your hours vary week to week, the time card calculator or the hours calculator can total them first.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 2,000 and calling it exact. It is a handy mental shortcut, but it overstates the hourly rate by 4%.
  • Treating monthly pay as four weeks. A year has 52 weeks but only 48 if you count four per month, so monthly pay is about 4.33 weeks of pay.
  • Removing paid vacation from the weeks. If your vacation is paid, keep 52.
  • Comparing gross with take-home. These figures are before tax. Compare them only with other gross figures.

Glossary

  • Gross pay. Pay before taxes and deductions.
  • Biweekly. Paid every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year (occasionally 27, depending on the calendar).
  • Semimonthly. Paid twice a month, 24 paychecks a year.
  • Exempt employee. A salaried employee who is not entitled to FLSA overtime pay.

Worked examples

A full-time salary as an hourly rate

A $65,000 salary for a standard 40-hour week, paid for all 52 weeks of the year.

Inputs (Salary to hourly): Annual salary = $65000; Hours per week = 40 hours; Paid weeks per year = 52 weeks; Workdays per week = 5 days

Paid hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080 Hourly rate = $65,000.00 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 Monthly = $65,000.00 ÷ 12 = $5,416.67; biweekly = $65,000.00 ÷ 26 = $2,500.00

Answer: A $65,000.00 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $31.25 an hour before tax ($5,416.67 a month).

An hourly wage as a yearly salary

A $22.50 hourly wage, 40 hours a week, every week of the year.

Inputs (Hourly to salary): Hourly wage = $22.50; Hours per week = 40 hours; Paid weeks per year = 52 weeks; Workdays per week = 5 days

Paid hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080 Annual salary = $22.50 × 2,080 = $46,800.00 Monthly = $46,800.00 ÷ 12 = $3,900.00; biweekly = $46,800.00 ÷ 26 = $1,800.00

Answer: $22.50 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $46,800.00 a year before tax ($3,900.00 a month).

A 37.5-hour week with two unpaid weeks

A $52,000 salary for a 37.5-hour week, counting only 50 paid weeks (two weeks unpaid).

Inputs (Salary to hourly): Annual salary = $52000; Hours per week = 37.5 hours; Paid weeks per year = 50 weeks; Workdays per week = 5 days

Paid hours per year = 37.5 × 50 = 1,875 Hourly rate = $52,000.00 ÷ 1,875 = $27.73 Monthly = $52,000.00 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33; biweekly = $52,000.00 ÷ 26 = $2,000.00

Answer: A $52,000.00 salary at 37.5 hours a week for 50 weeks is $27.73 an hour before tax ($4,333.33 a month).

A part-time job during the school year

An $18-an-hour job at 25 hours a week over four days, worked 48 weeks a year.

Inputs (Hourly to salary): Hourly wage = $18; Hours per week = 25 hours; Paid weeks per year = 48 weeks; Workdays per week = 4 days

Paid hours per year = 25 × 48 = 1,200 Annual salary = $18.00 × 1,200 = $21,600.00 Monthly = $21,600.00 ÷ 12 = $1,800.00; biweekly = $21,600.00 ÷ 26 = $830.77

Answer: $18.00 an hour at 25 hours a week for 48 weeks is $21,600.00 a year before tax ($1,800.00 a month).

Assumptions and limitations

  • All figures are gross pay before federal, state and local income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any other deductions. No tax tables are applied.
  • Paid hours per year are hours per week × paid weeks per year. With the defaults of 40 hours and 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours.
  • Monthly pay is the annual amount ÷ 12, biweekly pay is ÷ 26 and semimonthly pay is ÷ 24, the way salaried payroll spreads a yearly figure. Weekly pay is the hourly rate × hours per week, for a week you are paid.
  • Daily pay is weekly pay ÷ the number of workdays you enter (5 by default).
  • Overtime, bonuses, commissions, tips and the cash value of benefits are not included. Use the overtime pay calculator for hours over 40.
  • Hours per week can be at most 168 and no more than 24 per workday; paid weeks can be at most 52.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my hourly rate from my salary?

Divide your annual salary by the hours you are paid for in a year. For a standard 40-hour week paid all 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours, so a $50,000 salary is $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour before tax.

What is the quick rule for salary to hourly?

For a 40-hour week, divide the salary by 2,000 for a rough figure, or by 2,080 for the exact one. $70,000 ÷ 2,000 is $35, while the exact rate is $33.65. In reverse, doubling the hourly rate and adding three zeros gives a rough salary, so $30 an hour is roughly $60,000 (exactly $62,400).

Should I use 52 weeks or fewer if I get paid vacation?

Use 52 when your vacation and holidays are paid, because the salary covers them. Use fewer weeks only for time that is genuinely unpaid, such as a seasonal break. Leaving out paid vacation makes the hourly rate look higher than what you earn per scheduled hour.

Does this calculator take taxes out?

No. Every figure is before tax. Take-home pay depends on your filing status, state, pre-tax benefits and retirement contributions, so it varies too much between people to estimate from salary alone.

How much is $27 an hour per year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $27 an hour is $56,160 a year before tax, which is $4,680 a month or $2,160 every two weeks.

Why is my biweekly paycheck not the same as two weeks of hourly pay?

With 52 paid weeks, it is, because annual ÷ 26 equals two weeks of pay. If you enter fewer paid weeks, the calculator spreads the smaller annual total over 26 paychecks, as an employer paying a fixed salary would, so each paycheck is less than two full working weeks.

How is the federal government's hourly rate different?

Federal agencies divide annual basic pay by 2,087 hours rather than 2,080, to reflect the average number of workdays in a calendar year over a 28-year cycle. That makes the federal hourly rate slightly lower, for example $23.96 instead of $24.04 on $50,000.
