Formula
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237
- kilograms
- the mass you have in kg
- 0.45359237
- the exact number of kilograms in one avoirdupois pound (so 1 kg = 2.20462262 lb)
- pounds
- the same mass in pounds; the fractional part × 16 gives ounces
Kilograms to pounds: the exact factor
Since 1959 the pound has been defined in terms of the kilogram: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly. Turned around, one kilogram is 2.20462262 pounds. Every kg to lbs conversion is a single division by 0.45359237, or multiplication by 2.20462.
Say a checked bag weighs 19 kg. 19 ÷ 0.45359237 = 41.89 lb. Most people then want ounces too: 0.89 × 16 = 14.2 oz, so the bag is 41 lb 14.2 oz. This converter does both steps, and also gives stone and pounds for UK readers and a quick × 2.2 estimate to check your mental math.
Mental math: kg to lbs without a calculator
- Double it and add 10%. For 68 kg: double is 136, 10% of 136 is 13.6, total 149.6 lb. The exact value is 149.91 lb. This is the same as × 2.2.
- For more accuracy, add another 0.2%. 149.6 × 1.002 ≈ 149.9 lb, essentially exact.
- Reverse: halve, then subtract 10%. For 200 lb, half is 100, minus 10 gives 90 kg (exact: 90.72 kg).
- Remember a few anchors. 10 kg ≈ 22 lb, 50 kg ≈ 110 lb, 100 kg ≈ 220.5 lb.

Body weight in kg and lbs
Most of the world weighs people in kilograms, while US doctors, gyms and driver’s licenses use pounds. If you are converting your weight to work out body mass index, the BMI calculator takes either unit, and the ideal weight calculator gives ranges in both. Neither replaces advice from a clinician.
Baby weights in pounds and ounces
Hospitals outside the US record birth weight in grams or kilograms; US families announce it in pounds and ounces. Calculated with the converter:
| Birth weight | Pounds and ounces |
|---|---|
| 2.5 kg | 5 lb 8.2 oz |
| 3 kg | 6 lb 9.8 oz |
| 3.5 kg | 7 lb 11.5 oz |
| 4 kg | 8 lb 13.1 oz |
| 4.5 kg | 9 lb 14.7 oz |
Luggage, gym and shipping weights
- Checked bags. Many airlines cap economy bags at 23 kg, which is 50.71 lb, and heavy bags at 32 kg, or 70.55 lb. US carriers quote 50 lb and 70 lb, so the limits match to within a pound.
- Gym plates. Olympic plates come in kg and lb versions that look alike. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, slightly lighter than a 45 lb plate (20.41 kg). Mixing them on one bar throws off your total.
- Parcels. Couriers round up to the next whole pound or half kilogram, so a 2.3 kg box (5.07 lb) may be billed as 6 lb.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by 0.45 instead of dividing. That converts pounds to kilograms. Pounds are lighter, so the pound number must be bigger.
- Reading 5.5 lb as 5 lb 5 oz. It is 5 lb 8 oz, because a pound has 16 ounces, not 10.
- Using 2.2 for precise work. The shortcut is 0.2% low: about 0.4 lb on a 90 kg person and 46 lb on a 10-tonne load.
- Confusing lbs and lb. They are the same unit; “lb” is the standard symbol for both one and many pounds.

Worked examples
Body weight in pounds
A scale shows 63.5 kg. Convert it to pounds (with stone and pounds for UK readers).
Inputs: Value = 63.5; From = Kilograms (kg); To = Pounds (lb)
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 → 63.5 ÷ 0.45359237 = 139.993536 lb quick check: 63.5 × 2.2 ≈ 139.7 lb
Answer: 63.5 kg = 139.993536 lb (139 lb 15.9 oz)
Newborn weight in pounds and ounces
A baby weighs 3.2 kg at birth. US birth weights are given in pounds and ounces.
Inputs: Value = 3.2; From = Kilograms (kg); To = Pounds (lb)
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 → 3.2 ÷ 0.45359237 = 7.054792 lb quick check: 3.2 × 2.2 ≈ 7.04 lb
Answer: 3.2 kg = 7.054792 lb (7 lb 0.9 oz)
Pounds back to kilograms
A US weight of 185 lb, converted the other way to kilograms.
Inputs: Value = 185; From = Pounds (lb); To = Kilograms (kg)
kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237 → 185 × 0.45359237 = 83.914588 kg
Answer: 185 lb = 83.914588 kg (185 lb 0 oz)
Under one kilogram (edge case)
A 250 g pack, where the pounds-and-ounces line is more useful than the decimal.
Inputs: Value = 0.25; From = Kilograms (kg); To = Pounds (lb)
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 → 0.25 ÷ 0.45359237 = 0.551156 lb quick check: 0.25 × 2.2 ≈ 0.55 lb
Answer: 0.25 kg = 0.551156 lb (8.8 oz)
Assumptions and limitations
- The pound is the international avoirdupois pound, exactly 0.45359237 kg. The decimal result is rounded to 6 places.
- Pounds-and-ounces rounds the ounces to 0.1 oz (16 oz = 1 lb); stone-and-pounds rounds to 0.1 lb (14 lb = 1 st).
- The quick estimate multiplies kilograms by 2.2. It is shown only as a check and always reads about 0.2% low.
- You can also convert pounds back to kilograms, or use grams, ounces or stone; the extra lines always describe the same weight.
- Weights can't be negative. This converter does not give medical advice; for body-weight targets, see a health professional.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert kg to lbs?
Divide by 0.45359237, or multiply by 2.20462. For example, 72 kg × 2.20462 = 158.73 lb. For a rough answer, multiply by 2.2.
How many pounds is 1 kg?
One kilogram is 2.20462262 pounds, or 2 lb 3.3 oz. That is why a 1 kg bag of flour is a little heavier than a 2-lb bag.
How do I convert kg to pounds and ounces?
Convert to pounds first, then multiply the decimal part by 16. 2.7 kg is 5.9525 lb; 0.9525 × 16 = 15.2 oz, so it is 5 lb 15.2 oz. The converter shows this line automatically.
How do I convert lbs to kg?

How do I convert kg to stone?
Divide the kilograms by 6.35029318. 88 kg is 13.86 st; the decimal 0.86 × 14 = 12 lb, so it is 13 st 12 lb. The converter gives stone and pounds directly.
Why does my scale show a slightly different number?
Bathroom scales usually round to 0.1 kg or 0.2 lb and convert internally, so switching units on the scale can differ from an exact conversion by a few tenths of a pound.
